The long term skin condition that initiates swelling and redness primarily on the face is called rosacea. Beginning as redness on the cheeks, nose and chin, rosacea is known for its exacerbations and remissions. The symptoms tend to progress to more constant redness, evolving into visible blood vessels that appear along with bumps and pimples. Severe cases can cause the nose to become swollen and bumpy, a condition called rhinophyma (Celebrities with this condition are WC Fields and former President Bill Clinton). Rosacea is incurable. Treatments are to control or eliminate the symptoms.
Early intervention will help to impede the disease from progressing. A dermatologist makes a diagnosis by evaluating the clinical symptoms and determining the type of rosacea. The initial step in treatments is to control a flare up by identifying what sets off the symptoms. The cause of rosacea is unknown however several factors can contribute to outbreaks. Common instigators include: sun exposure, extremes of hot and cold, wind, heavy exercise, alcohol consumption (red wine, beer), spicy foods, hot beverages (coffee, hot chocolate), certain fruits or vegetables and stress.
Treatment regimes may work best in combinations. Topical medications are applied to the skin to decrease redness and bumps. Metrogel or clindamycin are common topical rosacea medications. Oral medications are used to assist in reversing the symptoms systemically. Laser skin treatments are effective in reducing the redness associated with rosacea. Pulse dye lasers such as the Candela V Beam and IPL treatments such as Photofacial have been very effective in shrinking and eliminating the facial blood vessels that tend to dilate during a flare. Two to four treatments are required to control the symptoms. Laser treatments performed for rosacea generally have no downtime, have minimal swelling and minimal redness after treatment.
